
More smolts entering the sea this year
According to the benchmarking programme run by Aquabench in Chile, the local industry had entered 22.9 million smolts of Atlantic salmon up to February this year, representing a 96.6 percent increase compared with the same period of 2011 (11.6 million smolts).
Meanwhile, 14.1 million smolts of Rainbow trout had entered the sea in the first two months of this year, representing a 10.5 percent decrease compared with the same period of 2011 (15.8 million).
Finally, the local industry had entered 20.6 million smolts of Coho salmon up to February this year, representing a 21.0 percent decrease compared with the same period of 2011 (26.0 million smolts).
The benchmarking programme run by Aquabench represents around 91% of the Chilean salmon industry.
