Senior Geneticist

Position Description

The Senior Geneticist will join the core breeding and genetics group at Akvaforsk Genetics. Reporting to the Managing Director, the job holder will join a highly skilled team of experts in applied selective breeding with members from across the Benchmark Genetics division. The position is to be based at Akvaforsk Genetics’ headquarters in Sunndalsøra, Norway. The Sunndal region represents a major Norwegian cluster of aquaculture R&D related to genetics, nutrition, intensive production systems and technologies. Located in the fjord area of Western Norway the region also offers unique opportunities for outdoor activities year-round.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct role as leader or assistant leader for Akvaforsk Genetics’ deliveries to Benchmark’s own breeding programs for salmonids, tilapia and marine shrimp, or to external clients

• Assist technical deliveries to other breeding programs

• Lead, coordinate or contribute in relevant R&D projects

 

Requirements

Essential skills and qualifications:

• A higher degree (PhD or equivalent) in applied genetics (i.e. animal breeding, genomics, statistics, or other relevant areas)

• Industry experience in quantitative and molecular genetics, data management, and extensive knowledge and understanding of quantitative genetics and its application in livestock or aquaculture species.

• Experience handling large scale genetic evaluations and/or analysis of genomic data

• Strong scientific publications record in relevant field

• Excellent problem-solving skills

• A self-starter comfortable with working with colleagues and clients in a variety of international locations

• Self-motivated and autonomous with effective time management abilities

• Flexible and able to travel nationally and occasionally internationally as required

 

Salary:

Salary depending on qualifications and experience

Hours: Full time, working no less than 37½ hour per week

Location: Sunndalsøra, Norway (other location may be considered under specific circumstances)

Reports to: Managing Director, Akvaforsk Genetics Center
