Renewed funding for the Shellfish Enhancement Program emphasizes the government’s commitment to growing island industries, says PEI's Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Alan McIsaac.

“Prince Edward Island is recognized around the world for our high quality food products, including our island oysters,” says McIsaac. “It’s important we continue to support our industries to ensure the sustainability of our resource and help meet the growing demand in national and international markets as we continue to build upon [our reputation as] Canada’s Food Island."

PEI is the largest oyster producer in Atlantic Canada, with more than 1,000 fishers and aquaculturists involved. In 2014, approximately 7.3 million pounds, worth $9.3 million, were landed. Oyster landings are projected to increase over the next several years, as is global market demand.

“The Island’s shellfish industry is an important sector for economic growth, especially in our rural communities,” McIsaac continues. “The Prince Edward Island Shellfish Association does excellent work ensuring the sustainability and growth of the industry. It’s important we work together to ensure the industry remains strong.”
