He is also the author of a book, Uncharted Territory: The Story of Scottish Devolution 1999-2009, covering the first 10 years of the Scottish Parliament.

In a press release, the SSPO said Macdonell brings a wealth of engagement experience that will be crucial as the industry continues to build its global reputation for excellence.

Significant experience

SSPO chief executive Julie Hesketh-Laird said: “I am delighted to bring Hamish on board to bolster the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation’s strategic engagement.

Julie Hesketh-Laird: Macdonell's engagement experience "crucial".

“Hamish is one of Scotland’s most respected political journalists and brings significant experience in public and stakeholder engagement.

“The Scottish salmon farming industry is a source of great pride for Scotland and is highly valued in our 60-plus markets across the world. He will strengthen the SSPO’s expertise at a busy time as we continue to grow the reputation of Scottish salmon and shine a light on industry good practices and achievements.”

Greatest growth industries

In a series of messages on Twitter this morning, Macdonell said: “After 9 yrs working for The Times, freelance and staff, I have decided to take on a new challenge. Been a privilege to work with such a great team on such a quality paper.

“But now looking forward to working in one of Scotland’s greatest growth industries and with one of our most iconic products.

“Later this year, I shall become Director of Strategic Engagement at the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation.”

Fettes-educated Macdonell, who lives in the Borders and is a keen angler, will join the SSPO in early November.
