Award-winning salmon processor St James is to expand with a new factory in Gretna, a few miles from its existing site in Annan.

Award-winning salmon smoker St James Smokehouse is expanding by building a new salmon processing factory at Gretna which will create around 50 jobs.

It was announced this week that Annan-based St James has been granted just over £1 million from the European Union's European and Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the Scottish Government to cover half the £2.15m cost of the new development.

The EMFF will pay £806,000 and the Scottish Government a further £268,000.

St James, which also has a factory in Miami, produces premium quality salmon fillets and multi award-winning Scottish smoked salmon.

Past accolades include Scotland Food & Drink “Export Business of the Year” and “Business of the Year”. The company has also won numerous gold medals from the UK Guild of Fine Foods’ Great Taste Awards, gold medals at the Monde Selection, International Institute for Quality Selections, and “Best Retail Product” at the Boston Seafood Show.

It has also made it on to the shortlist for both Small Exporter and Export Team of the Year at this year's Scottish Export Awards, run by Scottish Enterprise and BQ magazine. The winners will be announced next month.
