SalMar splashes out £150m on new biomass permits

Norwegian salmon farmer SalMar has spent NOK 1.76 billion (£150.5m) to buy licences for an extra 8,057 tonnes of maximum allowed biomass (MAB).

SalMar, which co-owns Scottish Sea Farms, bought the extra capacity in the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries’ auction of new aquaculture licences which closed today.

SalMar said 4,263 tonnes of the acquired capacity is in production area 6-7, with a total consideration of NOK 1,002 million.

The remaining volume, 3,794 tonnes, is distributed further north, between the production areas 11 to 13, with a total consideration of NOK 758m.
