SSC's Native Hbridean Sea Trout strain has been developed from fish captured in the wild on North Uist.

Plans to raise Scots sea trout production

The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) has revealed plans to increase its sea trout (Salmo trutta) production fifty-fold in the next three years.

SSC began sea trout production following its purchase of North Uist Fisheries – which had been developing a strain from locally-caught wild sea trout – in 2013.

Since then SSC has continued to develop the strain and was able to harvest 10 tonnes of the fish during 2015.

However, Craig Anderson, MD of the company, revealed in the company’s full annual report, which was published last week, that: “This year we will start harvesting in the summer and plan to harvest approximately 30 tonnes. We have an ambition to increase this volume and by 2018 produce up to around 500 tonnes of Native Hebridean Sea Trout. This autumn, we will be laying down the families in our family breeding programme to continue to enhance the existing lines.
