Kate Casey When PHARMAQ was granted sales licenses in 2006 for two new oil-based vaccines specifically developed for Chile, the company set it sights on being the first supplier of an “all in one” vaccine specific for Chilean raised salmon. According to the Diario Llanquihue’s publication of Visión Acuícola, sales manager Oliver Wehner (photo) and technical director Bernd Wrege of PHARMAQ presented the new vaccine during a inaugural ceremony in Puerto Varas last Friday, attended by salmon specialists throughout the industry. With one injection of ALPHA JECT 4-1, salmon will be protected from IPN, Vibrio Ordalii, SRS and Aeromona. The vaccine is composed of the local antigens of each of the illnesses. “This vaccine doesn’t exist in other countries, in fact the Vibrio ordalii and P. salmonis antigens are Chilean,” states Wrege. He mentioned that the ALPHA JECT 4-1 is a result of ten years of exhaustive research and development. It is speculated that PHARMAQ as well as other vaccine producers will do extremely well with the introduction of multiple action vaccines, since the use of antibiotics in Chile has reached its limit. “Salmon companies are betting strongly on the use of vaccines not only because of its benefits in production, the community and consumers also want to see less use of antibiotics. The ALPHA JECT 4-1 will minimize the need for antibiotics,” according to Wrege.
