The farm comprises 10 circular net pens containing 550,000 salmon with an average weight of 4.2kgs.

“The company’s priority at this time is to secure the fish cages in place until Storm Ellen subsides, and to safeguard staff, contractors and fish stock,” stated Mowi.

“The company has informed Marine Scotland of the event. A final update will be provided after recovery is complete.”

79mph winds

Mowi’s statement did not say whether there had been a suspected fish escape.

Storm Ellen brought very strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK and Ireland through Wednesday night, and the Met Office announced further wind warnings for yesterday and today.

The unseasonably deep Atlantic low-pressure system brought very strong winds and impacts across the island of Ireland, with power cuts and reports of roads blocked by fallen trees in Northern Ireland. Wind gusts of 62mph were recorded in Fermanagh early on Thursday morning, with 79mph recorded at Capel Curig, north Wales.
