Lumpsucker transfer made easy

Cleaner fish are often transported long distances – fish caught in the wild can be carried from Sweden and southern parts of Norway all the way to farmers in Trøndelag in middle Norway.

Currently, when the trucks arrive at the farms the conditions for receiving the fish are often suboptimal – normally there is no access to wellboats and traditional farm boats are not designed for transporting live fish.

Therefore Nor-Dan boatyard and Tveiten Transport have joined together to design a tank system that will make the transport processes more efficient and less harmful to the fish.

The special tank they are constructing will have a built-in oxygen bottle which can easily be disengaged from the transport unit's automatic oxygen system, aerators and vehicle monitoring systems.

After the switchover, further monitoring is done with a handheld meter. The tank can also be connected to water circulation pumps on the boat.

The tank is designed for easy lifting. Load capacity will be approximately 2.15 tonnes

“We think fish welfare will be improved and the stress factor will be reduced when the fish does not need to be transferred from the tank in the truck to a new tank in the boat,” says Jarle Tveiten, the owner of Tveiten Transport.

The price for one tank will be around NOK 45,000 NOK (£3500) and the new design will be launched for sale in early 2016.
