Former SSC and Mowi Scotland executive joins net maker Garware

Experienced fish farming executive Alan Sutherland has joined Indian net maker Garware Technical Fibres as Scotland manager.

Sutherland, whose most recent role was as marine director for the Bakkafrost-owned Scottish Salmon Company, will take up the role on July 1.

The executive has spent 40 years in the sector, initially working with trout in 1982 and moving into Atlantic salmon production in 1997.

He has held various senior roles in the sector including nine years as managing director of Marine Harvest (Scotland) Ltd – now Mowi - and has been involved in various aquaculture-based consultancy projects and board appointments, including producing tilapia in Africa and barramundi in Iowa in the United States.

Focusing on innovation

“In collaboration with our Scottish partner W&J Knox Ltd, Alan will further support and develop the aquaculture market for our next exciting innovation, which will be unfolding in the very near future,” said Garware’s European sales manager Kanwal Malik.

“With this new position, Garware Technical Fibres will continue to focus on providing innovative, application-focused solutions, geared to enhancing the value to our customers.”

Garware Technical Fibres is the world’s largest producer of innovative aquaculture cage nets, lice skirts and ropes for many of the world's major fish farmers. Products include its Sapphire range of anti-predator netting.

The Pune-based company made the huge pen nets used in the Havfarm developed by Norwegian salmon producer Nordlaks.

Garware is listed in India and has a turnover of approximately US $141 million. Its products, which include a variety of ropes for moorings, netting, trawls, purse seines and coated textiles, are currently sold in 76 countries.
