First Magallanes harvest for AquaChile

Salmon farming giant AquaChile has carried out its first harvest of salmon from the Magallanes region, in the extreme south of southern Patagonia.

Chile’s biggest salmon farmer acquired farms in the region around a year ago and has been using them to grow what it calls its “chef’s choice” premium-brand Verlasso salmon.

“The reality of harvesting responsibly from the cold waters at latitude 60 south manifests another step in AquaChile’s Verlasso brand mission of sustainability at scale,” said the company in a press release.

‘Richness and flavour’

“The convergence zones along the coast of Chile where low salinity waters circulate through the farms provide richness and flavour like nowhere else on the planet.

“By adding Magallanes [region] the customer service and order fulfillment that goes along with the ultra-premium brand becomes even more of a reality.”

AquaChile is supplying whole fish, flown from the regional airport in Punta Arenas to the United States and Europe.

‘Pristine conditions’

Verlasso salmon is four-star Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certified and harvested from Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified sites.  

“Harvesting in Magallanes means Verlasso is raised in pristine conditions, reaffirming AquaChile’s commitment not only to sustainability but to the economic future of the company and the communities we support,” said Vicente de la Cruz, Verlasso’s global commercial manager.
