Inhabitants within and surrounding Aysén Fjord were rudely awakened by another earthquake at early dawn yesterday. According to the Diario La Nación an earthquake of 4 degrees on the Mercalli scale was felt in Puerto Aysén, Puerto Chacabuco and 3 degrees in Coyhaique. The epicenter was located in the Aysén Fjord, an area that has been seismically active since January. The fjord received a violent earthquake of 7 degrees on the Mercalli scale three weeks ago (Saturday, April 21), killing 3 and leaving 7 others unaccounted for. Immediately following that disaster the Aysén region received several after-tremors, but as of last week the shakes had settled. The relatively mild quake reported yesterday did not produce further damage to infrastructure, however inhabitants of the region have suffered an accumulation of minor damages to their homes, belongings, and peace of mind since the onset of the region’s seismic activity.
