Chile improves US exports
Chile was the largest exporter of salmon and trout to the USA in the first three months of the year, with exports totaling 39,442 tonnes - up 12 per cent compared to the same period of 2015 (35,214 tonnes).
Despite the increase in volume, the value of these exports fell by 6.4%, to US$ 328.40 million. However, this negative result is reducing every month - it was -17.2 per cent in accumulated returns in January and -8% in February.
Canada was in second place, with returns of US$ 150.63 million and 23,263 tonnes. Those results represent 6.5 and 13.8 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first three months of 2015.
According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place with sales of US$ 104.85 million and 11,210 tonnes. Those numbers represent 15.8 and 12.3 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively.
Meanwhile, China (China, Hong Kong and Taipei) was in fourth place, with returns of US$ 61.78 million and 11,480 tonnes. These figures represent 18.5 and 5.7 per cent decreases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the same period of 2015.
Finally, the United Kingdom was in fifth place, with returns of US$ 24.02 million and 2,759 tonnes. Those results represent a 3.6 per cent increase in value and 0.6 per cent decrease in volume, compared to the first three months of the past year.
US imports of all salmon and trout products as of March 2016 totaled 97,026 tonnes, worth US$ 749.14 million.
