Aquaculture governance in the spotlight at webinar

A free webinar asking the question “Is governance the missing ingredient for sustainable aquaculture?” will be co-hosted by Stirling University’s Institute of Aquaculture and Wageningen University & Research’s Centre of Sustainability Governance today.

Aquaculture sustainability is a shared goal among governments and markets around the world but achieving it is made challenging by the continued rapid expansion of the sector, say the organisers.

Ensuring sustainability not only depends on improved practice on farms, but also on the role that governments, the private sector, NGOs, certification organisations collectively play in developing legitimate solutions and opportunities for sustainable innovation.

The webinar explores the role of governance in realising the ambitions of the sector and introduces the Aquaculture Governance Indicators (AGIs) as a framework for assessing the performance of aquaculture governance around the world.

Improvements

The AGIs were developed by researchers from the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen in the Netherlands with support from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program in the United States and aim to provide insights in the ways in which governments, industry and civil society groups can make improvements towards sustainable aquaculture.

The seminar will open with a short presentation outlining the research of the AGIs provided by Wageningen’s Dr Simon Bush. This will be followed by a video mash-up of academic, industry and consumer views and an interactive discussion on the topic with a diverse panel of experts.

The hour-long event begins at 1pm BST. Register for the event here.
