Scots eye German market

Scottish Quality Salmon (SQS) has enlisted the help of  a German intern, Nele Hartwig, to investigate market development opportunities for Label Rouge Scottish Salmon (LRSS).

Over the next five weeks, Nele will make initial preparations for a series of events to mark the 25th anniversary of Label Rouge Scottish Salmon (LRSS) next year and will compile information for possible market development.

Germany is a potential growth market for LRSS and Nele, who lives in Hannover, will use her multilingual abilities (German, English, Spanish and French) to investigate possible opportunities there.

She has spent the first week of her internship meeting the team at SQS and the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation, learning about the Scottish salmon industry and the Label Rouge brand. This week, as part of the research brief, she is meeting with producers to understand their various marketing strategies and aspirations.

Commenting on her experience so far, Nele said: “The Scottish salmon industry appears very organised and focused on high quality standards and animal welfare, which is very important nowadays and also very important to me, personally.

“Before I came here I did not realise how extensive the range of work in the industry is. There is so much you have to consider ‘from the egg to the plate’.

“I am looking forward to getting to know about the farming processes and learning more about the industry. I am also very interested in the political aspects of the industry, the communication processes and learning more about the different cultural aspects you have to consider for marketing in different countries.”
