“We believe that the project we have together with [marine construction engineers] Aker is pioneering the concept of a new future-oriented way of doing sustainable production,” Høstlund told kyst.no.

NRS originally applied for 15 licences for the development titled “Semi-submersible offshore aquaculture in steel”, with a combined MTB of 11,700 tonnes, but the Directorate has not yet decided how many licences will be granted.

Høstlund told kyst.no that the company had made good progress in preparations for the project, “and it’s very rewarding to work with so many talented people at our partner Aker. In this project we combined knowledge of the aquaculture industry with strong offshore expertise.”

Confirming when the project can begin depends on the final allocation, but Høstlund said: “We have a desire to get started as soon as possible. We are very pleased that the Directorate of Fisheries has considered the developed offshore facility in the scheme of development permits. We also believe that the project which will increase space utilisation by enabling operations further from the coast.”
