The company plans to appoint 55 people across a range of disciplines including production, logistics, maintenance and health and safety.

Ewan MacColl, Operations Director – Processing and Feed for Marine Harvest said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a thriving industry. It’s an exciting time to join the company, working on a plant which will be one of the most efficient and sustainable feed plants in the world.

“We are looking for a wide range of skills and will provide comprehensive training. The aquaculture industry is hugely successful and offers great opportunities for career development and we’re particularly keen to recruit local people, whenever possible.”

Storage silos

The £93 million plant will produce fish feed to supply Marine Harvest’s salmon farms across the western Highlands and Islands of Scotland, as well as Ireland, Norway and the Faroe Islands.

Marine Harvest announced their plans to build a feed plant in Scotland in 2016 and planning permission was granted earlier this year. Construction is now well under way and the plant is due to be completed in autumn 2018.

The chosen site at Altanavaig (or Allt Anavig) quarry at Kyleakin, is more than large enough to accommodate this major development which will include the feed plant itself as well as raw material storage silos, product storage and packaging, a loading area and car parking.
